The 78 Project is a documentary and recording journey inspired by Alan Lomax and his quest to capture music where it lived throughout the early 20th century. Our project brings the spirit of his work into the present as we pair breakthrough musicians with the songs and the fascinating recording technology of the past. With just one microphone, one authentic 1930′s PRESTO direct-to-disc recorder, and one blank lacquer disk, musicians are given the opportunity to make a recording anywhere they choose. What we have found is that the film, music and feelings that result defy space and time, living music inspired by ghosts.

(El proyecto 78 es un documental y grabaciones diarias inspiradas por Alan Lomax y su aventura por capturar la musica donde vivia alrededor de los comienzos de el siglo XX. Nuestro proyecto brinda el espiritu de su trabajo en el presente asi como emparejar a los músicos de vanguardia con las canciones y la tecnología de grabación fascinante del pasado. Con sólo un micrófono, un auténtico 1930 PRESTO directo al disco grabador y un disco en blanco lacado, los músicos tienen la oportunidad de hacer una grabación en cualquier lugar que deseen. Lo que hemos encontrado es que el cine, la música y los sentimientos resultantes desafían el espacio y el tiempo, vivir la música inspirada en los fantasmas.)

This video is the first from our recent road trip to the South to record musicians in their home towns.  On our trip we visited with dozens of incredible musicians like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Sid Selvidge, The Bo-Keys, Holly WIlliams, John Paul Keith, The Holmes Brothers, Ella Mae Bowen, Man Man and many more.  We'll be posting episodes and music from the trip and from our New York series on our site in the months to come.  And next summer, we'll be releasing our feature-length documentary film about the process of traveling to record musicians on this incredible piece of antique technology and our quest to discover how the music connects us all.

(Este video es el primero de nuestro viaje reciente de la carretera hacia el sur para grabar músicos en sus lugares de origen. En nuestro viaje visitamos con decenas de músicos increíbles como Mary Chapin Carpenter, Selvidge Sid, Las Claves Bo-, Williams Holly, John Paul Keith, The Holmes Brothers, Ella Mae Bowen, Man Man y muchos más. Estaremos publicando episodios y música del viaje y de nuestra Nueva York serie en nuestro sitio en los próximos meses. Y el próximo verano, estaremos lanzando nuestro largometraje documental sobre el proceso de viajar a grabar músicos en esta increíble pieza de tecnología antigua y nuestra búsqueda para descubrir cómo la música nos une a todos.)

The 78 Project film is a grassroots documentary, so we've decided to take a grassroots approach to funding. Music of Haiti / The Espwa Sessions Volume 1 (Son de Soley)

About the sales of this album:
ALL of the money from the sales of this album will go directly towards medical relief and clean water for the people of Haiti.
More specifically, our non-profit, "The Espwa Foundation" will use the sales and donations in the following ways:
*sending urgent medical supplies
*medical mission trips
*clean water projects

About the recording of this album:
The name "Son De Soley" means "Sound of the Sun" in Creole. This name umbrellas several groups, explained in detail below.
This album was recorded over the past year in Cap Haitien, Haiti. Tracks 1-6 are sung by one group of +-15 girls who call themselves "The Divine Princesses". Track 7 is a church choir practice from the area of Rouge Plate , 8-12 are sung by a choir of 5 girls from the EBAC orphanage. Tracks 13 & 14 are from a blind accordion player named Jack. The outro is a grade school class in Jacquesyl, where the most lovely teacher "Utilde" invited us in for a song.
